Surfing in Afghanistan (2013)
(War, Drama, Adventure)
Status: In Development
SURFING IN AFGHANISTAN is set during the current conflict in Afghanistan and is about a young, disillusioned U.S. Marine and an Afghan National who go AWOL and trek through war-torn Afghanistan to surf the waves along the Pakistani coastline.
This timely story about the search for freedom in a land where none exists has me excited because of its unique, revisionist’s take on the contemporary war film and western.
Elliot Davis, Cinematographer
Yesterday, I received word that acclaimed cinematographer Elliot Davis – who just shot THE IRON LADY with Meryl Streep and the pilot for AMC’s HELL ON WHEELS; as well as LORDS OF DOGTOWN, I AM SAM, TWILIGHT, GET ON THE BUS and OUT OF SIGHT – has agreed to attach himself to SURFING IN AFGHANISTAN. Elliot is currently shooting MAN OF TAI CHI with Keanu Reeves. At SXSW last year, Elliot had WON Best Cinematography – Narrative Competition for A YEAR IN MOORING that starred Josh Lucas.

Sketch Music #3
More original sketch music for SURFING IN AFGHANISTAN. Again, this is not music that will end up in the final project, but music that guides and inspires the creative and visualization process.
Fahim Fazli
I wanted to introduce you all to Fahim Fazli. Fahim is currently attached to play the antagonist GAFAR in SURFING IN AFGHANISTAN.
Fahim has been seen in films such as IRON MAN, CHARLIE WILSON’S WAR, and EAGLE EYE; and on television in 24, LOUIE, OUTSOURCED and CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM.
Fahim Fazli was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, and enjoyed a privileged childhood. When Fahim was twelve everything changed. The Russians invaded Afghanistan and his mother fled with his older brother and younger sisters. Fahim was left behind with his younger brother and father. He supported the resistance and became a member of the “Freedom Fighters”. Eventually Fahim, his father and brother ended up in Pakistan, it took six years for the three of them to join the rest of the family in the United States.

Sketch Music #2
Here is a second piece of original sketch music from SURFING IN AFGHANISTAN. When I start thinking about images and ideas for projects I begin playing around with exploratory music to inspire what I’m seeing, thinking and hearing. It’s just part of my process to begin building layers and textures.
Sketch Music #1
When I start thinking about images and ideas for projects I begin playing around with exploratory music to inspire what I am seeing and hearing. Although this is a sample of music that won’t end up in the finished film, it is being used to start sketching what the film could sound like. Based on what I am thinking this how we begin to think about what kinds of sound is possible. That’s what we call it sketching. It’s originally composed music that Robert Hunt and I have been working up.
You can begin to hear all the different influences of music we are playing around with. Again, it’s quick compositions. Helps to visualize. Helps with ideation of other things as well.
